Without such colouring agents, amethyst would simply be transparent, ordinary colourless quartz. Like other varieties of microcrystalline quartz, amethyst has transparent to translucent clarity and a vitreous luster. Cryptocrystalline varieties of quartz almost always occur with translucent to opaque clarity.
