Citrine is the
yellow to orange variety of Quartz. Natural Citrine is not common; most Citrine on the gem market
is produced by heat treating Amethyst and Smoky Quartz. ... The name Citrine is derived from the
citron fruit, a yellow fruit similar to the lemon. (In fact, citron means
"lemon" in several languages.
It is recognized as the
official birthstone for the month of February. Amethyst belongs to the
microcrystalline branch of quartz and owes its violet/purple color to iron and
aluminium impurities. Without such colouring agents, amethyst would simply be
transparent, ordinary colourless quartz. Like other varieties of
microcrystalline quartz, amethyst has transparent to translucent clarity and a
vitreous luster. Cryptocrystalline varieties of quartz almost always occur with
translucent to opaque clarity.
Peridot is a gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine. It belongs to the forsterite-fayalite mineral series. Some even refer to peridot as 'olivine', but when it comes to the gemstone, 'peridot' is the correct term. Peridot is an idiochromatic gem, meaning its color comes from the basic chemical composition of the mineral itself and not from minor traces of impurities. Thus, peridot is found only in green. In fact, peridot is one of the few gemstones available that can be found only in one color, although the shades of green may vary from light yellowish to dark brownish-green.
