Onyx is black and white banded agate (cryptocrystalline or chalcedony quartz). It should not to be confused with onyx marble, which is limestone. The banding of onyx is parallel and consistent. Some varieties of onyx differ in color, such as sard onyx, which has a brown base and white upper layer, cornelian onyx, which has a red base and white upper layer, and niccolo onyx, which has a very thin upper layer, allowing the black base color to show through as grey or blue. Onyx takes its name from the Greek word "onux", which means fingernail; this could be due to a Greek legend, in which Eros mischievously cut the fingernails of Aphrodite with an arrowhead whilst she slept, and the gods turned the clippings into stone.
Smoky Quartz is the brown "smoky" variety of Quartz. It ranges in color from light brown to black. Despite its dark color, it is rarely opaque. Smoky quartz is faceted or cut into beads and cabochons. These gems are often used in rings, pendants, necklaces, earrings, and brooches for people who like the yellowish brown to brown color.Smoky quartz with a dark brown color is often used in men's rings and cufflinks. During the Victorian Period, dark brown stones from the Mourne Mountains of Ireland were often used in mourning jewelry.Because smoky quartz has a low price and large pieces are easily obtained, it is a favorite practice material of people who are learning to facet. It is also frequently used as a carving material.
Druzy is a
highly sought-after precious substance which is popular for use in jewelry.
Until about 10 years ago, however, drussy minerals were little more than a
curiosity. While of interest to serious mineralogists, they went unnoticed by
jewelry designers, gem collectors, and the general public. But the appeal of
drussy material is easy to understand. With its multitude of tiny crystals,
drussy possesses a reflective surface reminiscent of sugar or snow. Most
species of drussy gems, even those with vivid colours like hot pink
(cobalt-calcite), day-glow green (uvarovite), or multi-colour (rainbow pyrite
), are natural. Quartz drussy is available in mostly muted natural colours.
Additionally, many quartz pieces are dyed black or other colours, and some are
coated with titanium or other metallic vapour to create various iridescent
finishes.
